Introduction to Universities in British Columbia

There are 96 universities throughout Canada, with branches in various provinces, among which Ontario, B.C. and Quebec account for housing the most. There are 24 universities in Ontario and 16 in B.C. Although there are 18 universities in Quebec, most of them are French schools and only three teach English.

Today, let's learn about several universities in Vancouver.

University of British Columbia

University of British Columbia, also known as UBC, was founded in 1908 and is the oldest university in British Columbia. The university is located in Vancouver. For its doctorate program in Medicine, it was ranked third among universities in Canada in 2017 by McLean, the most authoritative magazine in Canada. In its over 100 years of operation, the University of British Columbia has become a world-famous research center with world-class artistically-constructed facilities. Also because it is located in Vancouver with its pleasant climate and picturesque scenery, it attracts many students from all over the world every year. There are currently about 60,000 students at UBC.

UBC covers an area of 400 hectares with 12,000 hectares of forests and farms outside the campus. The university promotes outstanding scientific research, includes 17 research institutes, 50 research centers, 8 interdisciplinary research organizations, 3 hospitals, and is engaged in more than 8,000 research projects. The university attracts $500 million a year from the government, companies, and non-profit organizations. Its library is the second largest library in Canada. The campus is also home to art galleries and museums. There are 370 clubs in the university. Canadian students with an average grade percentage of about 80 in high school are eligible to apply for UBC. Modesty, studiousness, and wisdom are important factors for UBC students to succeed. Since its establishment, UBC has cultivated many outstanding talents who play important roles in their respective fields. Figures such as Justin Trudeau, the current Prime Minister of Canada, and John Turner, the former Prime Minister of Canada, graduated from this famous university.

Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University, also known as SFU, was founded in 1965 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was named after Simon Fraser, an explorer who charted much of British Columnia. SFU is a top comprehensive public research university in North America, and its computer science, interaction design, and business programs are among the highest ranking in the world. With less than 50 years of history, SFU ranks among the top 50 universities younger than 50 years from around the world. According to QS World University Rankings, it ranks 16th in the Top 50 Under 50 category and 179th in overall. In 2017, it ranked 1st among Canadian comprehensive universities according to Maclean's Magazine.

SFU provides a first-class research and postgraduate study environment and boasts a variety of world-class scientific research facilities engaged in all kinds of pioneering research and world-famous scholars. The school’s mission is to put students at the core of the community and to use scientific research as a driving force and in service of society.

UBC is located in the northwest corner of Greater Vancouver, while SFU occupies almost an entire hill on the east side of Greater Vancouver. The SFU campus is still expanding outward along the east side and connecting to the urban community. Students who come to Vancouver usually consider UBC and SFU first and are proud to study here. These two universities have long been sought after by many students from all over Canada and the world.

Emily Carr University of Art and Design

Emily Carr University, formerly known as Vancouver Art School, was established in 1925. The university began to use the name Emily Carr University of Art and Design on September 1, 2008 and is the oldest college in British Columbia that specializes in programs for art, media, and design. It is also one of the world's leading art colleges. Emily Carr University has established partnerships with many institutions, including the David Suzuki Foundation, TED Toastmasters, car2go Company, and TRIUMF, the National Laboratory of Particle and Nuclear Physics of Canada, which gives students the opportunity to apply art and design thinking to real problems and actual situations.
